Bedding Plants

Autumn is a perfect time to plant winter and spring bedding plants.

Due to the  lack of growth in the winter the earlier you can plant out in the Autumn the better, so plants establish quicker and produce more flowers, this is particularly true for winter flowering pansies.

Unfortunately there is not the choice of plants as there is for summer bedding, the main stay of displays from Autumn right through to late spring are winter flowering pansies, violas, primroses, polyanthus, bellis, wallflowers, myosotis and stocks.

You can also try mini cyclamen, although not regarded as totally hardy, they will usually last until the new year in a sheltered location even longer in mild areas.

Pansies

pansies will flower all year round althougth they are mostly winter and spring bedding plants. They come in a variety of colours so are suitable for most gardens. They last right up until summer bedding is planted but they will last longer. We recommend to plant them in autumn. They like be in a sunny position and in well drained soil. Pansies are so popular because of their ability to flower in the winter, to make them last longer dead head them regularly. They have three basic colour pattens, there is blooms which are a single colour with one clear colour. The second pattern is a single colour with black lines radiating from the middle. The last type is a flower with a dark center called a face.

Bellies

Bellies are ever green plants. They mainly flower spring and early summer and somtimes flower in the autumn. They like to grow in the sun but can flower in partial shaded areas. They like to grow in well drained soil. The main colours are red, white and pink. They are very good plants to have because the flowers do not suffer from weather damage.

Primroses

Primroses are both winter flowering and spring flowering plants but is greatly influenced by the weather. They will grow in shade or in the sun. Deadhead regularly to produce more flowers.
